Electrolytic manganese, also called electrolytic manganese metal or EMM, is produced by electrowinning from manganese sulfate solution. Manganese ore is leached and purified to remove iron, heavy metals, and other impurities, then electrolyzed to deposit pure manganese on the cathode. The product is stripped, washed, and crushed into the thin, irregular flakes that are standard for industrial dosing. Commercial grades are typically 99.7 percent or 99.8 percent manganese, among the highest purities available among manganese ferroalloys.

The process begins with sulfuric acid leaching of manganese carbonate ore, followed by purification with ammonium sulfide and other reagents to precipitate impurities. The purified electrolyte, containing manganese sulfate and ammonium sulfate, is electrolyzed in diaphragm cells at controlled current density and pH. Manganese deposits on the cathode as a dense layer, which is stripped, rinsed, and dried. Flakes are sieved and packed under controlled conditions to preserve purity and prevent oxidation.

Electrolytic manganese flakes are used as an alloying addition to adjust the manganese content of steel precisely, deoxidize the melt, and improve the strength, toughness, and hardenability of carbon and alloy steels. In stainless steel production, manganese stabilizes the austenite phase and enhances corrosion resistance, and in the manufacture of manganese alloys it serves as a raw material for silicomanganese and other manganese alloys. Low carbon and impurity levels make EMM the preferred choice where tight chemistry control is required.

Each lot is verified by chemical analysis of manganese, carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus, with particle size and bulk density checks before packing. Flakes are packed in sealed bags to prevent moisture pickup and oxidation, and certificates of analysis are provided with each shipment.
